"Miracle of the Roses", St Francis Church, Ingleby Barwick - Acid etched, painted, leaded glass by Alan Davis
Glass Panel by Alan Davis

Alan is a designer-maker of architectural stained glass producing work from his studio at Lythe, on the North Yorkshire coast.  Much of his work is ecclesiastical but he also produces private, public and contemporary exhibition pieces.

Most of Alan's work involves the use of traditional mouth blown antique glass from Germany, France and Poland.  He uses various techniques which include acid etching, glass painting, sliver staining and enamelling to achieve varying degrees of colour and texture.  All paints stains and enamels are kiln fired for permanence.  Within the last 3 to 4 years Alan has been exploring the use of kiln formed glass in much of his work especially the use of float glass.  This adds another dimension to the many different ways of embellishing the glass surface.
The work is highly influenced by the forms, colours and textures of the environment in which he lives and works. Alan is highly influenced by textured surfaces either natural or manmade and finds that experimentation of these varying techniques produce some interesting results. He says of his work.   “ I deconstruct an image or idea, analyse it and reconstruct it allowing the design to react to itself.  I am constantly trying to capture the ‘feel’ or essence of a given subject matter”.
