Alison Holt was born in Oswestry Shropshire England. She completed a Foundation Course at Shrewsbury School of Art in 1976 and went on to study Fine Art Textiles and Embroidery at Goldsmiths College London qualifying in 1979. In the same year Alison was invited to exhibit in Texprint `79 as one of the years 30 most promising graduates in the country.

Returning to Shropshire Alison taught at Wrexham College of Art for three years before starting her own studio near Chester in 1982.

Alison started to explore her love of gardens and the countryside through the medium of embroidery finding it the perfect vehicle to express the various textures and shapes she finds so fascinating. She combines in her compositions a sense of light and an interesting juxtaposition of colour, shape and texture.

She works to commission and exhibits her embroideries in Britain at the Chelsea Flower Show and other venues and in the United States.

Her book "Plants and Flowers in Machine Embroidery" published by Batsford in 1990 was launched at Libertys in London.Reprinted in 1997 in paperback.Her second book,A Beginners Guide to Machine Embroidery was published by Search Press in January 2002.
Alison is currently writing her third book A Beginners Guide to Machine Embroidered Flowers. It is due to be published at the beginning of 2006.
