My work has always reflected on the desire to nurture, protect and nourish both physically and emotionally. I have researched family life and the life of the community within my work and the use of humour to convey feelings of acceptance and belonging to the individual.
Exploring the use of traditional stitch and print alongside more unusual items such as metal and wire. The physical act of deconstructing and reconstructing traditional tablecloths has given me an insight into how nurturing has evolved and has made me realise the importance of learning from the past but moving forward with confidence.
Tablecloths form the main pieces of my final project work. They have once been part of a family’s home life but now discarded or past on. Recycling has formed a strong link within my work. Each completed piece reflects on the personality of an individual or aspects of family and community life. The images on the pieces are drawn from my own experiences of growing up and being loved within a close-knit community and my reflections on its humour and warmth.
