  Selected Makers

Alyssa Smith

I graduated from the University of Hertfordshire in Applied Arts and Marketing in 2008, and now design and create my collections by hand in my Hertfordshire workshop. Working primarily in gold, silver, gemstones and freshwater pearls, my collections are inspired by nature and fairy tale themes. The essence of romance often runs throughout my designs too. I frequently create bespoke work and one off pieces and like to incorporate hidden meaning and symbolism into each design. I have made several commissions for celebrities such as Suzi Perry and have had my work and editorial features in national magazines. I am currently exhibiting work at ‘The Biscuit Factory’ gallery in Newcastle Upon Tyne and other galleries around the country including ‘The Jessica Muir’ gallery and ‘Artifex’ gallery.

My latest collections ‘Cherry Blossom’ and ‘Midnight Blossom’ take inspiration from the Japanese ‘SAKURA’ festival where the welcoming of Spring is celebrated when the Cherry Blossom blooms for its short life. A promise of luck for the year ahead; the cherry blossom is an important symbol in Japanese culture and I wanted to reflect this symbol in my collections by using attractive hammered texture and coloured gemstones such as pink tourmaline and peridot to create floral symbols that people would enjoy wearing. The ‘Midnight Blossom’ collection shows a different perspective of the cherry blossom festival which carries on well into the night with candles in the trees and is based on the wonderful shapes that the cherry blossom casts from the evening shadows.

"So long, and thanks for all the fish"

After very many years of craft&design we've decided that we'd like to retire and so in 86 days we will close the craft&design website, including craft&design Online and the craft&design Selected Makers and Craft and Design Month websites. We've had a brilliant 35 years and would like to thank all our readers, advertisers, writers, contributors and website visitors for their support throughout that time. Our very best wishes to you all for the future - Angie and Paul.
