Award-winning stained glass artist Angharad Whitfield creates bespoke commissions and one-off gallery pieces from her fully equipped workshop in the heart of the Brecon Beacons. She is skilled in all areas of stained glass, including leading and copper-foiling, acid-etching, painting, screen-printing and sandblasting.
Angharad designs and makes both small scale and large scale windows, panels and light boxes in close collaboration with clients.
"Everything I make in glass has a very personal meaning to me, each design drawing on my love of a piece of literature, a play, a film, a place, a person that has moved me in some way in my life, the feelings these inspire in me which I want to commemorate. The incongruity of taking the medium of stained glass- which for many people has a very traditional religious image- and using it as a way to express the personal or the political is what fascinates me.
Each piece I make is unique, each part of the process accomplished by hand, using methods and tools that have hardly changed for centuries. My work combines contemporary techniques with traditional painting medium, a feeling of fluidity and movement with the traditional tenets of solid construction and meticulous design."
