Craft in Focus

Angie Weston

Green Man - mosaic by Angie Weston

Angie Weston is a working mosaic artist, creating and developing her work through her business "The Tessellated Spirit" based in Somerset.
Exhibiting mainly in London and the South of England during the spring and summer months she specialises in practical pieces for everyday use in the home and garden, and also undertakes individual client commissions. Trained as a fine art painter in the 1980's she recently converted a barn into a studio/ workshop in the Charente region of France. This will enable her to offer regular mosaic courses for those with a keen interest in learning this challenging and exciting craft. Working only in Italian glass each piece of tessera is carefully cut and shaped by hand.

Many of her pieces take their inspiration from Mythology and Celtic Traditions.  Tropical sea themes are also recurrent aspects of her work. Strong emphasis is placed on movement and flow in the designs with vibrant colour combinations to excite the eye.

"I love the unique, individuality of each creation and I am fascinated by the effects changing the grout colour can have on the glass. You can change the whole look, mood and tone of an artwork by experimenting with the way the glass absorbs the surrounding pigment. Mosaics are wonderfully durable and long-lasting making them the perfect medium to withstand extreme conditions. They do not degrade in sunlight or in humid or hot rooms such as bathrooms or conservatories"
