I draw my design inspiration from textures, patterns and structures found within both the natural and manmade environments. I explore these aspects through observational drawings and the manipulation of different mark making techniques. Primarily I produce my initial drawings and studies in ink, but also utilise a combination of mixed media to explore additional surface qualities.
I apply my designs to the Harris Tweed using hand silk screen printing. By manipulating this technique I can create fluid and detailed patterns on which to embellish using combinations of applique and machine embroidery. Colour is a vital aspect of my work and I embrace eclectic colour combinations and compositions within my choices of fabrics, inks and finishing details. Having created and sewn all my life it has been a natural progression for me to develop these pieces of Harris Tweed into three dimensional forms that can be both practical to use and thoroughly enjoyed.
