Annie Hewett

Lettered jug and mug by Annie Hewett

I originally studied Graphic Design at St. Martins in the seventies and subsequently developed an interest in calligraphy which I taught at Stroud School of art for many years whilst also continuing with freelance design work and inscriptional calligraphy, with projects covering a wide range of design briefs from cruise liners to municipal buildings.
I began to concentrate on making ceramics in 2001.

I use white earthenware clay and coloured slips, yellow for the interiors and a strong cobalt slip for the outsides through which I scratch, draw and cut away, much as in the tradition of linocuts, to create my designs. Lettering often forms an integral part of my work.
The work of printmakers and  textile designers provides much of my inspiration as does my continuing interest in plant forms and typography.

I fire the work in an electric top-loader to 1100 degrees using a simple lead bisilicate transparent glaze.
