Beatrice Wall

After an inspiring degree in Contemporary Design Craft at Hereford College of Art, Beatrice has set up her own small workshop to sculpt with her chosen materials of copper and enamel. Beatrice has a passion for beetles, which inspire her, through a fascination with nature and small creatures. Early experiences of wild camping engaged her to see the fascinating natural beauty up close in different environments.  She never lost that feeling of wonder when she sees the potential in something so small. Tiny beetles observed in nature, together with museum collections that present a wonderful range of species enabled her to take inspiration that feeds her work. The brilliant collections of live, preserved and historical artifacts at the World Museum in Liverpool absorbed her imagination for hours, with their diverse shapes and ingenious evolutionary quirks. The vibrancy of that collection, synthesized into this gathering of glowing forms and textures, creates new dimensions to her beetles. The dynamic shaping of the various characters constantly evolves as the beetles seek their original and surprising final identities, colours and textures. Introducing the textural elements of ethically conscious, fur, hair and wool contributes to the creation of a unique artifact. She hopes to create a resonance between the inanimate materials and a living creature to create something interesting for the viewer, challenging them as well as aesthetically pleasing them too.The tactile and intense creation process is itself Beatrice’s creative space, where the moment is as vital as the conception and planning.

"So long, and thanks for all the fish"

After very many years of craft&design we've decided that we'd like to retire and so in 7 days we will close the craft&design website, including craft&design Online and the craft&design Selected Makers and Craft and Design Month websites. We've had a brilliant 35 years and would like to thank all our readers, advertisers, writers, contributors and website visitors for their support throughout that time. Our very best wishes to you all for the future - Angie and Paul.
