Brendan’s Bears
Brendan trained as a tailor and for ten years worked as coat maker for a bespoke tailor. In his spare time he applied his tailoring skills to soft furnishings. It was during one of these projects in 2006 that he made his first bear from left-over fabric. He then made bears for family and friends, who encouraged him to take up bear making seriously.
Brendan lives in Oxford where he designs and makes his bears, working mainly with mohair and alpaca. Each bear is one of a kind, traditionally hand made using glass eyes and cotterpin joints, and intended for adult collectors. Brendan makes young person-friendly bears as commissions and these are a regular feature of his work.
Launched in 2007, ‘Brendan’s Bears’ have since exhibited at craft and design shows and specialist teddy bear fairs throughout the country.
In 2009 Brendan was commissioned to design and make bears for The University of Oxford Shop.
Brendan’s bears have won national and international awards, including first prizes in the British Bear Artist Awards, the National Teddy Bear Artist Awards and the Exhibitors’ Challenge at the Teddy Bear Artist Event UK.
Brendan is a member of the Guild of Master Bearcrafters.
