Carol Naylor

Carol is one of the UK’s leading artists in machine embroidery. Much of her work is based on landscape, with architecture, still life and poetry also providing imagery and ideas. Rayon, cotton, metallic and woollen threads are constantly overstitched onto canvas to make her uniquely individual and richly coloured works
She says about her work-

‘I work on a domestic sewing machine, mostly stitching from the back of the fabric as many of my threads are too heavy to go through the eye of the needle and go on the spool underneath.
This intensive, continual stitching changes the base fabric from a flat surface to one that moves and undulates with its own unique quality. The sculptural qualities, and loops and textures caused by tension and thread changes are an integral part of the process. It is another way of drawing and painting, created with wonderful vibrant colours and textured threads.
My abiding passion is landscape. What really interests me is the way in which the surface of the land changes wherever I am, so I look constantly for evidence of the underlying structures within natural land formations, and surface patterns created by cultivation. I draw and develop from first hand resources, exploring qualities of light and shade, line and colour. Each country I visit is different and requires its own palette in order to interpret the things I discover’.

Carol has had several solo shows as well as contributing to numerous other exhibitions across the UK and abroad, and her work is represented in many private collections worldwide. Recent exhibitions include the prestigious show SOFA in Santa Fe and Chicago USA where her work was represented by Zest Gallery, London. She has taught widely across the UK, in the USA and in New Zealand as well as exhibiting in galleries in France, Portugal and Spain.

Works range from larger scale hangings and framed pieces suitable for corporate or business clients, galleries and exhibitions, to smaller more intimate pieces that would grace any home or office. Pieces have been commissioned and collected by corporate and private customers, education authorities and hospitals.

"So long, and thanks for all the fish"

After very many years of craft&design we've decided that we'd like to retire and so in 7 days we will close the craft&design website, including craft&design Online and the craft&design Selected Makers and Craft and Design Month websites. We've had a brilliant 35 years and would like to thank all our readers, advertisers, writers, contributors and website visitors for their support throughout that time. Our very best wishes to you all for the future - Angie and Paul.
