Cathy Timbrell

Cathy graduated as a biological scientist but a love of stones, jewellery and metals in their natural forms led her into designing and making silver jewellery for over 30 years. After building a permanent workshop in 2008 in Buckinghamshire and retiring, she was able to devote most of her time to silversmithing. Originally taught the basic skills by her brother, she has attended short courses to develop new techniques such as enamelling but is largely self taught. She teaches locally and in the studio.

Although her work is very varied, there are themes and styles in a number of the pieces she makes that are distinctive. Ideas come from objects and patterns that often go unnoticed such as pieces of damaged buildings, cobbled streets and in particular, beaches. She also takes inspiration from other artists, including sculptors and painters such as Barbara Hepworth, Klimpt and Rothko.

Cathy uses the natural forms of molten, fused and reticulated silver which result in freeform designs that often reflect the patterns that you see on stony beaches and at the water’s edge where seaweed and drift wood accumulate. The unpredictable behaviour of heated silver means that many pieces are unique and give the jewellery an organic feel. She incorporates “free cast” silver, into designs and uses techniques such as embossing, forging and hammering to give textures. Designs often include vibrant transparent enamels, semi-precious stones and gold.

“I love the fact that I learn something new every time I go into the workshop and that inspires me to make different things in new ways”.

Cathy has exhibited and sold work in Berkhamstead, at the Artists’ and Makers’ Fairs, Bucks Open Studios, the Wooburn Festival, Oxford, St Ives and Penzance. However, most work, including commissioned pieces, are sold through the studio in Pitstone.

"So long, and thanks for all the fish"

After very many years of craft&design we've decided that we'd like to retire and so in 85 days we will close the craft&design website, including craft&design Online and the craft&design Selected Makers and Craft and Design Month websites. We've had a brilliant 35 years and would like to thank all our readers, advertisers, writers, contributors and website visitors for their support throughout that time. Our very best wishes to you all for the future - Angie and Paul.
