Lunch basket and hagstone by Christine Brewster

Contemporary Functional Basketmaker

I make functional baskets using traditional techniques and contemporary designs, characterized by flowing lines and organic forms. I make baskets for sale and to commission. Each basket that I make is unique and is the product of my own work from raw material to finished item. I enjoy making special and unusual baskets, and take great pleasure in repairing treasured baskets that would otherwise be consigned to the dustbin. I re-cane and re-rush chairs and also use basketmaking skills to make plant supports, structures and sculptures for gardens and school playgrounds. My usual material is willow, mostly grown in Somerset, some cut locally in and around Reading in Berkshire, but I often incorporate other natural materials derived from my work in wildlife conservation such as ash bark, hazel or montbretia leaves. My craft is environment friendly, low energy consuming, non-global and ultimately biodegradable. My passion for utilising the copious waste products from our modern society is shown in my basketmaking from recycled materials, often used for talks and demonstrations. I have many years experience of teaching groups of all ages.

Visit me at my workshop on the prestigious Englefield estate near Theale, Berkshire. Please phone first as I cannot always be there.
