  Selected Makers

David Ian Smith

Like many Furniture designers I started of in a different profession, my background was engineering.  In 2004 I decided to take three years out to study for HND in furniture design before setting up my workshop and turning a life long love of wood into a business. I set-up my workshop in January 2007 after compleating my HND at UCLAN, where I gained distinctions in all subjects along with several design awards for my work.

My workshop is based in Cam, Gloucestershire, where I work on private and commercial commissions and also produce individual works for exhibition and gallery’s.
Traditional woodworking skills combined with an engineering background enable me to produce furniture with a distinctive appearance. Although my work is generally influenced by my client’s needs, I like to produce furniture with a contemporary edge.

Clean flowing lines that define shape and form are inherent in my work. Inspiration comes from anywhere and everywhere I firmly believe that elegance and style can be found in almost everything, its’ all down to our point of view, seeing what we want to see and not what we expect to see. Wood is a beautiful material and so the beauty of a piece should be in its form and function and generally the idea that “less is more” will stand to be true.

With my background in engineering I am well placed to undertake unusual designs as well as more conventional work. Commissions can be taken in various styles using both traditional and modern construction techniques. Each piece is indevidualy built to the clients own requrments weather it’s a simple TV cabinet or a piece of exhabition quality studio furniture.

"So long, and thanks for all the fish"

After very many years of craft&design we've decided that we'd like to retire and so in 30 days we will close the craft&design website, including craft&design Online and the craft&design Selected Makers and Craft and Design Month websites. We've had a brilliant 35 years and would like to thank all our readers, advertisers, writers, contributors and website visitors for their support throughout that time. Our very best wishes to you all for the future - Angie and Paul.
