  Selected Makers

Debbie Siniska

I am a rag rug artist and feltmaker, working with recycled textiles and the sustainable fibres of sheeps fleece.

The rag rugs are made with  recycled woollen and cotton clothing, and some vintage materials. I work with traditional hand tools, to produce banners, wall hangings, rugs and cushions. My work is in shop at  Charleston Farmhouse, home of the Bloomsbury painters in the 20's.  The house is open to the public, and in the year 2000 I was commissioned to produce a replica of an old rag rug, made for the house which now lies in Maynard Keynes bedroom. The Tate Gallery in London, held an exhibition of Bloomsbury art, and to accompany this exhibition, I supplied the gallery with several Bloomsbury style rag rugs for sale in their shop. The Green Man, the hare and natural forms are also inspiration for my rugs and banners. I produce a range of geetings cards, made from images of my work.

My feltwork includes seamless hats and bags, nuno felted scarves with shisha mirrors, bangles and necklaces. I like to celebrate colour in my work.

I teach in schools and colleges in the UK including West Dean College, West Sussex, and hold my own monthly workshops in East Sussex.   My work has appeared in several craft/textile books and magazines, and has also been featured in the Sunday Times, and the Sunday Telegraph.

I was televised by the BBC whilst working with school children in Brighton, and for Channel 4 on 'Kirsties Homemade Home'.

I work to commission from my studio in East Sussex, and sell at shows, galleries and Open Studio in June each year.   My work has sold in National Trust venues, I am a member of the Sussex Guild of makers, and author of 'Rag Rugs- old into New, and 'Decorative Beadwork'

"So long, and thanks for all the fish"

After very many years of craft&design we've decided that we'd like to retire and so in 85 days we will close the craft&design website, including craft&design Online and the craft&design Selected Makers and Craft and Design Month websites. We've had a brilliant 35 years and would like to thank all our readers, advertisers, writers, contributors and website visitors for their support throughout that time. Our very best wishes to you all for the future - Angie and Paul.
