Desiree Hope

Fossil by Desiree Hope

Initially trained in ceramics, Desiree’s interest in glass started many years ago when she came across some vibrantly painted bottles at the equally colourful Glastonbury Festival. She was intrigued by the transparent and reflective qualities that she couldn’t previously achieve with ceramics and started to paint anything she could get her hands on, from jam jars to large glass vessels. After many years selling at craft fairs, Desiree became unsatisfied with merely painting the glass, and decided to undertake a degree specializing in glass blowing. Five years later with a degree and an MA under her belt she re-launched her new hand blown glassware business. In 2008 she opened the Desiree Hope Gallery, specializing in handmade glass. Alongside her own glass she exhibits the work of other talented UK glassmakers.

With a love of the countryside her glass ware is always inspired by nature. Fossil hunting along the North Yorkshire coast is a source of inspiration, and she is intrigued by the scientific investigation of nature through microscopy. The repetitive and intricate patterns that are revealed through the lens influence her engraved pieces. This is enhanced with extensive polishing, and in some of the pieces creates interesting optical illusions.

Desiree has recently been promoted to full membership with the Society of Designer Craftsmen.
