Donna Cheshire

Donna Cheshire is a textile artist based in the North East of England. Originally trained in textile design, she has found her niche creating textile landscapes in 2 and 3D, using hand dyed fabric, appliqué and stitch. With a strong sense of colour, Donna captures the mood of the landscape, matching fabrics and stitches to the textures of the scenery.

Working mainly with natural fibres and recycled fabrics, Donna prints and paints dye onto cotton sheeting, lace, linen and wool to give her a palette of colours and textures to work with. Subject matter is developed from sketchbook studies, via mixed media collage into appliqué, with more textural detail added through different stitch techniques. There are several sewing machines in her workroom – ranging from a vintage Singer to a 21st Century CAD machine, all are put to use in her work but often the best marks are made with a simple hand stitch.

Donna finds ideas flow as she works, so often one piece leads to a series – each unique but linked by form or content, as with her ‘Day Tripper’ series; each piece a combination of image and words that encapsulate a lovely way to spend a day, whether at the coast, or in the countryside. In all of her work, Donna hopes to convey a love of, and respect for, the British landscape from the drama of hills to the delights of the seaside.

"So long, and thanks for all the fish"

After very many years of craft&design we've decided that we'd like to retire and so in 86 days we will close the craft&design website, including craft&design Online and the craft&design Selected Makers and Craft and Design Month websites. We've had a brilliant 35 years and would like to thank all our readers, advertisers, writers, contributors and website visitors for their support throughout that time. Our very best wishes to you all for the future - Angie and Paul.
