Down to Earth

Down To Earth specialise in contemporary metalwork that combines steel with stained glass, blown glass, stone and wood to make unusual and distinctive sculptures for both home and garden.
Eye-catching and tactile, the pieces have integrity and individuality. The combination of colour, texture and form produce unique individual pieces and bold statements for the garden. People are devoting greater attention to their gardens today and the sculptures created by Down To Earth are certain to enhance the garden, whether starting from scratch or redesigning a garden. A lasting relationship with a work of art "Art in the Garden can be established, as with a garden, each sculpture has a life and meaning, which will grow and give pleasure for many years.
Down To Earth are husband and wife team Phil and Bridget Rogers and we have over twenty-five years of expertise between us in designing and working with steel and horticulture. In 1997, we established Down To Earth, merging our skills. Today we design and handcraft unique, modern sculptures that are definitely different. All our work is handcrafted at our workshop in Bronington a small village on the Shropshire/Clwyd border. All the sculptures are designed and made by Down To Earth who work closely with other local talented artists in our area: the Stained glass artist Julie Wright, and Glass designer/maker Sara Wood.
Finishes on the sculptures are either a natural rust patina or powder coated. The natural rust finish combined with the vibrant colours of the glass produce a brilliant contrast. We go to great lengths to achieve this finish. The steel sculptures are shot blasted to remove all mill scale, which renders it down to bare metal. This is then sprayed with water periodically until a deep, even finish is attained. On selected pieces, we then treat the sculptures with an oil-based coating, which seals the rust and produces a" suede" like look, which is suitable for both inside and outside situations.
Other pieces are powder coated in a choice of colours giving a durable and hardwearing finish, and used principally on the sculptures that are designed with the conservatory in mind.
