Esther Burdett

Esther designs and makes jewellery and accessories using reclaimed antique and vintage silks, laces, beads and other precious found objects. Her work is inspired by the idea of transforming and reworking beautiful perhaps forgotten fragments of the past into new forms, to be treasured and enjoyed all over again.

Evening bags
Each bag is a unique, one-off piece and is individually designed and made to harmonise with the style and proportions of its unique antique bag frame. Rare antique silks and laces are used to create the body of the bags, every piece having been carefully selected for its quality, and cut to maximise the beauty of the print or detailing. Other antique silks are then hand dyed and used for contrasting bag linings, ensuring that each finished bag is made using only the finest reclaimed components.

Resin Jewellery
Esther was searching for a unique way to display and preserve these precious silks and laces, sometimes only fragments, on a smaller scale. After many months of research and exploration using different media, she found that encapsulating the silks and laces in resin not only uniquely displayed the fabrics but also preserved them, and at the same time gave them a contemporary and edgier elegance. From this process evolved a range of jewellery, which naturally complements the bags. Each hand-finished piece of resin not only encapsulates antique fabric, but has also been cast from antique items of jewellery. The resin jewellery therefore has an 'antique feel' but with a completely modern setting.

"So long, and thanks for all the fish"

After very many years of craft&design we've decided that we'd like to retire and so in 1 day we will close the craft&design website, including craft&design Online and the craft&design Selected Makers and Craft and Design Month websites. We've had a brilliant 35 years and would like to thank all our readers, advertisers, writers, contributors and website visitors for their support throughout that time. Our very best wishes to you all for the future - Angie and Paul.
