Esther Lord

Interlock Vase by Esther Lord

After completing a Crafts Council funded two year residency at Birmingham City University’s School of Jewellery, where she now works as a visiting lecturer, Esther established her workshop in heart of Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter at the start of 2008.  Her award winning silverware has been exhibited across the UK and Europe.

Esther’s work is an exploration of containment and volume, light and surface pattern, used to create unique, one-off handcrafted silver vessels and tableware Inspired by the spatial interaction between objects and structures in the natural and urban landscape.
Her silverware is constructed using traditional sheet fabrication techniques, and hand scoring. The scored lines allow the metal sheet to be folded and manipulated into many varied forms. The pieces are overlapped and layered, exploring the effects of light on the surface of the metal.

“Silver is both beautiful and incredibly versatile, and I want to express this in my work. The warmth and delicacy in the soft sheen of the hand textured silver, contrasted with the play of light and shadow over angular folded surfaces and planes creates dynamism and movement.”

Esther sells her work and gains increasing recognition through high profile exhibitions such as Goldsmiths Fair, Origin at Somerset House, British Silver Week, and Desire. Her work was shown at COLLECT 2009 at the new Saatchi Gallery, London, by Lesley Craze Gallery. Esther is a member of Contemporary British Silversmiths and has work in their latest exhibition Side x Side, Edge to Edge which will tour museums and galleries throughout the UK for 2 years culminating in a final exhibition in the European Capital of Culture for 2011, Turku, Finland.
