Fiona Barber

Knitted Lapis necklace by Fiona Barber

Fiona Barber trading as Fe-B Jewellery

I studied Jewellery and Silversmithing at degree level at Central St. Martins School of Art and Design and at Loughborough College of Art and Design. I am now based in the East Midlands as a designer maker.

I create jewellery through knitting and french knitting coloured copper wires. My fascination with natural enclosures: chrysalis, crustaceans, seaweed, seed heads, molluscs and shells is reflected in the irregular, organic, pod like forms I construct. Some pieces follow a pre-designed pattern, but the majority are unplanned, knitted with no premeditation, so dictating their own form. I have always had a passion for colour and texture. Knitting with coloured wires provides a rich and sumptuous colour. The pieces I create, as well as being very colourful, are  textural with the combination of the different gauges of knitted wire alongside gemstone chips and glass beads.

Because of the techniques and materials used, all pices dictate their own finished shape, so making each and every piece unique.
