work by Gavin Marshall

I manipulate sheet glass in a kiln.  I use a combination of techniques to produce a finished product/artwork/commission.  I melt, bend, fuse the glass and incorporate drilling, sandblasting and polishing to create my finished artworks.  This may be the creation of a glass cheese board to the creation of a large wall or ceiling installation for a newly built hospital.

I apply my techniques to whatever I am working on whether it is large scale or small scale.  I introduce a lot more colour when working on my larger commissioned works because I am responding to a space and trying to create vibrancy and a positive feeling in the space.  I often work in a very organic way trying to give my artwork a real sense of being.  It’s almost like I want the artwork to become a life form and want people to be distracted by it and question its being.  The other reason that I bring a lot more colour into my larger commissioned work is to bring pleasure, joy and fun to my work.

I enjoy playing with textures and understand the importance of keeping the process simple.  Glass is captivating, glass is beautiful. A lot of the time introducing a few interventions instead of many can give much more impressive results.  When creating studio works and functional products I like to keep the process simple.  I take imprints off everyday materials like bubble wrap and cardboard and translate this into something beautiful that can simply be admired or used or both.
