Geoffrey Bickley

Geoffrey is a self taught woodcarver and has developed his style over the years into capturing the absolute essence of the bird.  He has been carving since 1993.

He works from his studio in the depths of Cornwall situated close to the Hayle Estuary where he has an ambundance of birds to draw from and an endless coastline of beautiful coves and beaches.

Geoffrey carves his birds mostly from reclaimed pine – preferring to use this wood because of it’s interesting grain.  Driftwood bases are often used in the carvings these are gathered during the winter storms and each piece is  chosen with great care to compliment the carving.

“I study the birds in their natural environment and when the sketch is complete I transfer this to the wood and cut it out.  I then use a chisel and mallet to shape the bulk of the body and other chisels for any fine detail or feathering that is needed. I paint my birds with a water base pigment paint and usually finish with a wax polish.

My aim is to create a shoreline  picture using soft flowing curves of the birds in several different poses.”

Geoffrey’s carvings are shown in various galleries and exhibitions, and have flown worldwide.

"So long, and thanks for all the fish"

After very many years of craft&design we've decided that we'd like to retire and so in 30 days we will close the craft&design website, including craft&design Online and the craft&design Selected Makers and Craft and Design Month websites. We've had a brilliant 35 years and would like to thank all our readers, advertisers, writers, contributors and website visitors for their support throughout that time. Our very best wishes to you all for the future - Angie and Paul.
