work by Hannah Louise Barker

I work in glass producing vastly different scales of artworks, from the small delicate work that comprises of stunning glass stones encased in sterling silver that forms my Jewellery range, to large scale gallery wall pieces.

The glass that I produce for my jewellery resembles semi precious stones and at times can be mistaken for opals. I build layers within the glass harnessing the light and creating beautiful patterns with colour.

For the large scale gallery installations and beautiful wall pieces, I use a variety of different techniques including fusing, slumping and kiln carving. I use these different methods to build layers into my work creating depth, texture and disrupting the passage of light. I kiln carve using laser technology, which enables me to formulate designs and cut complex patterns that I would never achieve cutting by hand. The combination of the controlled lines produced by kiln carving and prints of the natural environment create interesting depth and pattern within the glass.

All the glass that I produce has been influenced by my drawings or photos of the natural and man-made environment. My fascination with glass is due to the fact that glass is light in a solid form. Every piece of glass that I make from small to large, transmits and projects light and colour in a magical and enchanting way.
