Jacqueline James

Established weaver Jacqueline James makes individually designed hand-woven rugs and wall hangings.  Her unique work is in public and private collections in the UK and USA.  Major public commissions include weaving for Westminster Abbey, York Minster and the Jorvik Viking Centre.

Jacqueline specialises in collaborating with private clients, interior designers and architects to design and create bespoke weaving commissions that perfectly match the colour scheme and design style of any interior.

Bold, sophisticated colours and vibrant patterns are strong and distinctive elements Jacqueline’s woven rugs.  She uses a broad range of coloured yarns and blends several strands together, like mixing paint, to achieve the desired results.  Many of the designs are reversible.

Each one of a kind woven rug is custom made in Jacqueline’s York studio using British wool or cotton weft (horizontal threads) and linen warp (vertical threads).  She uses a variety of traditional weft-faced weaving techniques to create rugs and wall hangings which are both decorative and functional.

Her recent collection features several rugs made with custom-dyed cotton yarns that are ‘painted’ with permanent dyes before the weaving process to create interesting design effects.

Jacqueline’s colourful rugs are mainly contemporary in style using geometric patterns and stripe rhythms.  Inspiration for new designs comes from everywhere, especially beautiful colour combinations and interesting patterns from nature, landscapes and architecture.

"So long, and thanks for all the fish"

After very many years of craft&design we've decided that we'd like to retire and so in 2 days we will close the craft&design website, including craft&design Online and the craft&design Selected Makers and Craft and Design Month websites. We've had a brilliant 35 years and would like to thank all our readers, advertisers, writers, contributors and website visitors for their support throughout that time. Our very best wishes to you all for the future - Angie and Paul.
