Whilst attending a foundation course at Winchester School of Art, Jacqui Carey discovered that weaving combined her love of mathematics and art. This lead to a degree course in Textiles at WSCAD, where she studied a whole range of related subjects, including braidmaking. It was the start of a seemingly benign detour that has resulted in a lifelong passion, exploring structure, pattern and colour. Jacqui has worked in a wide range of materials from wire to paper clay, though she continually returns to the aesthetics of traditional silk. Jewellery is the main outcome of Jacqui’s work, and often incorporates semi-precious stones, beads and buttons. Her work has been exhibited and sold throughout the world.
The process of making is an integral part of Jacqui’s work, and her willingness to share this enthusiasm and knowledge has lead to many books, articles, lectures and workshops. In 2005, she was awarded The Queen Elizabeth Scholarship, and her research continues into the study of textile craft skills.
