Joan MacKarell

In her enamel pieces Joan evokes fragments of childhood memories spent on the Atlantic coast of Donegal. These fragments often explore the influence of the natural world, the geology of the boglands, the symbolism of animals and plants.

She endeavours to explore materials and in the most recent work she pushes the boundaries of her chosen medium - the art of fusing glass to metal. She often combines unusual talismanic stones with textured matt finished glass, resulting in highly individual necklaces imbued with an elemental and spiritual feeling.

In addition, Joan designs boxes, vessels and other items of jewellery, and undertakes large-scale commissions.

One of these public commissions was to be part of a team which produced the amazing Corpus clock which can  be viewed by the public in Cambridge see www.corpus clock and chronophage. Joan's task was to enamel the chronophage, the creature who controls the clock. She is currently involved in enamelling  another version of this creature.

"So long, and thanks for all the fish"

After very many years of craft&design we've decided that we'd like to retire and so in 57 days we will close the craft&design website, including craft&design Online and the craft&design Selected Makers and Craft and Design Month websites. We've had a brilliant 35 years and would like to thank all our readers, advertisers, writers, contributors and website visitors for their support throughout that time. Our very best wishes to you all for the future - Angie and Paul.
