John Evans

work by John Evans
After a life-time of collecting ceramics, I came to using clay as a creative medium in the mid 1990’s. This evolved into a new career path and, after graduating with a ceramics degree from Harrow in 2005, I established my studio, first in London, and latterly in Worthing. Since then the work has been shown at major ceramic and art fairs and proved attractive to galleries across the UK.

My inspirations are many but, in essence, the focus is on primitive cultures and their use of clay without glazes. The work moved on significantly after spending time with David Roberts, absorbing the essentials of his particular techniques.

I focus on one-off pieces which may be thrown on the wheel, hand-built, or sculpted and then press-moulded or slipcast. The decoration is an essential part of the work and uses various resist methods to direct smoke or chemical fumes into the burnished clay body. The tactile nature of the surface, often likened to marble, is as important to me as the form and the decoration. The outcome is work which is described as contemporary, contemplative, and intriguing. It is often purchased by interior designers looking for special pieces in minimalist modern homes.

I am a member of the Sussex Guild, the Southern Ceramic Group and the London Potters. The work featured in Ceramic Review in Mar/Apr 2008 and won the prize for the Best Decorated Piece at the 2008 London Potters Open Exhibition.
