John Parsons

John specialises in the challenge of making high quality small woodturned boxes, striving for the perfect shape, a closely fitting lid, and a beautiful tactile finish.

"I take my design cues from the natural environment, and these can be witnessed in the smooth, often gently curving and flowing profiles. Beauty from simplicity. Perfection in form. The natural environment. Working with natural materials. These are some of the things I am passionate about and which inform my work."

The boxes range from pure and simple, single wood designs, through to boxes featuring hand carved decoration, or hand inlaid contrasting woods to create designs in harmony with the natural figuring of the wood. Ornamented boxes are made extra special by the addition of contrasting features to the lid. Interiors are equally delightful, often with hidden design details.

These small boxes appeal equally to men and women who appreciate the craftsmanship, and are usually purchased for display as accent pieces.

John uses sustainable woods mostly from Europe and the USA. The wood is carefully chosen for its properties and each box designed to make the most of the natural features.
Wood is a natural material, so the colouring and grain pattern make each box a truly unique, exquisite little treasure, begging to be handled and fondled. Typical dimensions are 100mm tall and 75mm diameter.

John's work is increasingly exhibited throughout the UK in art and contemporary craft galleries, and has been acquired by international collectors. Items can also be purchased online.

"So long, and thanks for all the fish"

After very many years of craft&design we've decided that we'd like to retire and so in 62 days we will close the craft&design website, including craft&design Online and the craft&design Selected Makers and Craft and Design Month websites. We've had a brilliant 35 years and would like to thank all our readers, advertisers, writers, contributors and website visitors for their support throughout that time. Our very best wishes to you all for the future - Angie and Paul.
