Joia Glass Art was started in 2007 by husband and wife team, Joy & Peter Cole, both of whom previously had long and varied careers in a range of business environments ...

“ ...before we ran away and joined the circus!  We are now hooked on designing and making innovative glass art and jewellery; essentially self-taught, we also gained skills at the National Glass Centre and other respected centres and by working with internationally known artists and makers. 

We chose the name ‘Joia’ because in Portuguese it means jewel - reflecting light and colour - and it was also Joy’s nickname in Brazil, where she was born.

We continue to develop our own style of individual and unusual designs which are influenced by our love of natural forms, vibrant colours and use the natural beauty of light through glass. Our inspiration can come from a walk in the woods or on the beach, a sunset or cloud structure, waves, or from a found object – a stone, leaf, flower, textiles, driftwood – anything really!

To express these ideas we often try new and unusual ways of working with the glass - using its property to flow then ‘freeze’ in a new form to get effects of fluidity and texture.
 
Each item we make is a unique and individual piece, a product of our hands and imaginations to bring delight and enjoyment. The aim is always to make a beautiful product that will continue to give pleasure and interest.

We currently show and sell our work in galleries and at selected art, design and craft fairs throughout the UK as well as through individual commissioned work.
