Joy Funnell

Joy Funnell is a jewellery artisan in Hastings, East Sussex. She runs her own business combining selling in person at fairs, internet sales and teaching jewellery making.

Joy is passionate about her work and creates unique colourful one off pieces of jewellery using a combination of silver, enamelling, glass and gemstones. The jewellery is often reversible adding to individuality of each piece.

Her inspiration comes from the colours and beauty of nature which are all around us. From bright floral gardens to the ever changing moods of the sea there is always something to trigger a new idea for a piece.

Using Art Clay Silver as the main material each piece is created in the silver clay to a high standard of finis h before it is fired in a kiln to remove the binders and to sinter the silver particles together. After firing and polishing the pieces are hallmarked as fine silver at the London Assay office where she has her registered mark. She also hand makes the fine silver chains she uses on her larger pieces and her bejewelled bracelets.

Joy uses transparent enamels on the fired silver so the beauty of the silver can shine through and specialises in her Enamelled Accents technique where jewel like colours are captured in fine silver wires on the surface.

Joy is a Craftsman of the Guild of Enamellers and a Senior Art Clay Silver Instructor.

"So long, and thanks for all the fish"

After very many years of craft&design we've decided that we'd like to retire and so in 62 days we will close the craft&design website, including craft&design Online and the craft&design Selected Makers and Craft and Design Month websites. We've had a brilliant 35 years and would like to thank all our readers, advertisers, writers, contributors and website visitors for their support throughout that time. Our very best wishes to you all for the future - Angie and Paul.
