Gustav Klimt Exhibition at Tate Liverpool 30 May - 31 August

Judith Fisher

Judith is a Professional Member of the Craft Potters' Association and of The Sussex Guild. Recent work consists of wheel-thrown bowls & vases, mostly fired by the `Raku' method, in which the pot is withdrawn from a red-hot kiln with long tongs before being smothered in sawdust.
The process is very dramatic, creating plenty of flame & acrid smoke in which those pots which have been coated in a matt copper glaze undergo partial `reduction' to produce exciting and unpredictable colour variations, from emerald to purple and gold.
Other pots receive a special glaze which cracks away in the smoking process to leave interesting carbonised marks & veining on the bare clay.
The ware which successfully survives the intense thermal shock is porous, with a surface often scarred by tong marks, but each piece is completely unique and can sometimes be beautiful.
