Julie Bull

Julie Bull uses recycled cotton fabrics and threads to create her whimsical hand embroidered illustrations. Materials used in the work predominately come from her large collection of fabrics collected over many years with cherished scraps often being incorporated into the designs. Fragments of commercial and vintage fabrics are over dyed by hand to create a soft, faded, and comfortable to touch fabric with a sense of nostalgia.

The look is endearingly charming with a fairytale quality. Julie is inspired by the glorious colours and bold shapes of Folk Art and the stories and imagery of British folklore, the countryside and sea.

A fusion of techniques is blended into a quilt like cloth rich in imagery, colour and texture.
The illustrations marry western patchwork, appliqué and hand embroidery with the kantha stitched folk art quilts (Nakshi Kantha) of West Bengal, India
My work follows the kantha tradition of protecting ones family with a talisman of love created from old saris in the same way that rags are hung in the doorways of Indian temples and shrines. The illustrations conjure up feelings of warmth and nostalgia with comforting cuddles under warm quilts.

A place of nurture and safety and a “home sweet home” where I tell fireside stories to my little grandson whilst wrapping him in love. I see my embroidery as a narrative art form that satisfies my creative desire for storytelling. My aim is to be a textile storyteller in the best tradition of Folk Artists worldwide”

"So long, and thanks for all the fish"

After very many years of craft&design we've decided that we'd like to retire and so in 86 days we will close the craft&design website, including craft&design Online and the craft&design Selected Makers and Craft and Design Month websites. We've had a brilliant 35 years and would like to thank all our readers, advertisers, writers, contributors and website visitors for their support throughout that time. Our very best wishes to you all for the future - Angie and Paul.
