Ply - Split Braids and decorative cords
After graduating from Liverpool Polytechnic, I worked in the Textiles Department at the Surrey Institute of Art and Design, Farnham, until 2000 when I left to set up my own studio in Bromsgrove, Worcestershire.
In 1989 I attended a workshop on Ply - Split Braiding given by Peter Collingwood, in conjunction with the Animal Regalia exhibition held at Farnham. Following this, I became fascinated by Ply - Splitting and have since researched this and allied techniques both in UK and India.
I explore the technique and develop it to make functional pieces, neckpieces, bracelets and interior accessories and also sculptural works. The importance of yarn selection, cord making, and use of colour in relation to structure is vital to my work.
In 2004 I furthered my researches by travelling to Rajasthan & Gujarat in India. As a keen photographer, I brought back interesting images to support my work as well as exciting original textiles.
I enjoy giving talks and workshops on Ply - Split Braiding and my Textile research and have taught various groups both in UK and India.
I have exhibited my work in UK, France and USA.
I have also had published articles relating to my work.
I belong to the Worcestershire Guild of Craftsmen and show my work regularly with them. Shows include the Spring and Autumn Flower Shows at Malvern Worcs. For more information go to www.wgdc.co.uk
