Juliette Bigley

“Our lives are lived through, brightened by, and coloured by the objects with which we surround ourselves: our interactions with these objects are the basis of my work. Working in base and precious metals, I use the vessel-form as a canvas to explore how we negotiate our physical and emotional place within the world.  Focussing on line and form, my vessels - vases, dishes, bowls and spoons - are both sculptural and functional emerging from the context of the domestic and the rituals that characterise it.

All of my work involves relationships: within the piece through gestures and the relationship of form, between the piece and the viewer or between the pieces themselves and taking the form of individual pieces, pairs or groups that can be arranged and rearranged.

Beginning with a flat sheet of metal, I use a range of techniques including raising and fabrication to hand-make my pieces. All of my pieces are unique, or unique within a series.”

Juliette has exhibited extensively nationally and internationally including at Goldsmiths’ Fair, receiving a Special Mention and selected for curated sections by architect Zaha Hadid and former Director or the Serpentine Galleries Julia Peyton-Jones. She was selected by the Design Council as one of their Ones to Watch, a group of designers chosen for their potential to contribute to the future of design in Britain. As well as winning several other awards, she has been featured in Craft and Design, CRAFTS Magazine and the FT’s How to Spend It.

"So long, and thanks for all the fish"

After very many years of craft&design we've decided that we'd like to retire and so in 57 days we will close the craft&design website, including craft&design Online and the craft&design Selected Makers and Craft and Design Month websites. We've had a brilliant 35 years and would like to thank all our readers, advertisers, writers, contributors and website visitors for their support throughout that time. Our very best wishes to you all for the future - Angie and Paul.
