Julie Vernon

Julie Vernon produces contemporary handcrafted mosaics working with a mix of materials from vitreous glass and ceramic through to natural marble and slate.  She often incorporates individual pieces of vintage porcelain or worn down ceramic found washed ashore British beaches.  These fragments give the work a greater depth with each piece holding a hidden history and journey of its own.

Materials are skillfully cut and shaped by hand using a range of different tile nippers which in turn  makes each design unique and a one off.  Mosaics work beautifully in interior spaces but equally well in outdoor settings and in this instance frost resistant, weatherproof materials are carefully researched to ensure that the work is both durable and sustainable for its location. Inspiration largely comes from nature, in particular the colours and textures of the changing landscape.

As well as exhibiting Nationally she sells her work in select retail outlets and works on a variety of public and private commissions. Enthusiastic to share and pass on her craft skills, she successfully runs a programme of workshops and is engaged in a wide range of schools and community arts projects.

"So long, and thanks for all the fish"

After very many years of craft&design we've decided that we'd like to retire and so in 37 days we will close the craft&design website, including craft&design Online and the craft&design Selected Makers and Craft and Design Month websites. We've had a brilliant 35 years and would like to thank all our readers, advertisers, writers, contributors and website visitors for their support throughout that time. Our very best wishes to you all for the future - Angie and Paul.
