  Selected Makers

June Croll

work by June Croll

I am a textile designer/maker with a special interest in weaving. I weave with delicate dyed threads of silk and linen. Through the interplay of shadow and light, and the use of curves within what is traditionally a rigid static form I try to introduce the idea of movement and change into my weaving.

My work is informed by fleeting changes in nature; of skies, ripples of wind and water, reflections and shadows.

Materials used are mainly natural fibres, especially silk, which I colour by painting with dye solutions, thereby making each piece unique. I also like to experiment with more unusual materials such as copper wire, soluble thread and 'found' materials.

Work ranges from gossamer-fine silk scarves and wraps, to 3D pieces for interiors.

I regularly exhibit, take part in Open Studios, and sell through galleries. I also work to commission, offer private tuition, and run workshops for schools and other groups. My studio is in the centre of Norwich, part of an attractive complex of studios in the historic quarter of the city, once the hub of the textile trade, home of the world famous Norwich Shawls.  I like to feel I am helping keep these crafts alive, through combining traditional techniques with innovative design.
