Serenity Pendant by Karen Dell'Armi

I work predominantly in silver as I love it's malleability and receptiveness to texturing techniques. I do work with gold and platinum and other materials to commission.

My current range, Serenity, was inspired by Buddhist singing bowls and the resonating sound that they make when clanged together. I had a rough year healthwise in 2008 and found that meditating kept me sane and calm! The range of products includes huge neckpieces that can be worn as scarves through to earrings that feature minute bowls soldered into a small circle. The feedback I get from customers is disbelief that such chunky, visually impactful pieces can be so light & comfortable to wear.

I love simple, geometric shapes and forms and then adding an almost industrial 'edge' by using patination and surface pattern inside the bowls to add depth and then file back edges to make them harder to create more contrast. I aim to juxtapose architectural shape and form with softer more organic textures and surface patterns.

I also love creating organic, tactile surface patterns and textures using techniques such as planishing, milling, etching and patination. My Perseverance range features individually handforged links made up into long yet lightweight necklaces, delicate bracelets and tactile rings.

I am planning a new range for next summer inspired no doubt by my charity climb of Kilimanjaro in Jan/Feb 2010. I can't wait to discover the unique and varied flora & fauna, volcanic landscapes and ice ridges. I have designed a charity charm bracelet and am donating 10% of sales to Breast Cancer Care Cymru and Ty Hafan Children's Hospice as part of our fundraising effort. We are Welsh Women Walking Kilimanjaro, wish us luck!
