Kate Bajic

Kate graduated from Loughborough University in 2003 with a first class honours degree in Silversmithing and Jewellery. Her work has been exhibited and sold in galleries throughout the UK and Ireland, and displayed at a wide range of exhibitions.

Whilst on her degree Kate found a natural affinity for jewellery and enjoyed spending time making intricate models to help her visualise her designs. She has always promoted craftsmanship and quality of making in her work, and her jewellery is designed and created as much as possible by hand. Inspiration for Kate’s work comes from studying natural structures and forms. Themes of repetition, layering and movement have been constant in her jewellery.

In 2013, after 10 years of creating and selling, Kate decided to look again at her practice and to try & take it in a new direction. She applied to return to Loughborough University to undertake an Art & Design Masters degree. She was fortunate to not only be accepted onto the course but also to be awarded a School of the Arts Scholarship, enabling her to focus on completing the course full time over a 12 month period.

This experience has both challenged and motivated Kate, strengthening and developing her making skills and introducing her to new materials and techniques, including porcelain, loom weaving and laser cutting. Having the time to apply herself fully to the MA has meant that she has been able to research and create a completely new body of work with a strong concept running through it. Drawing on her initial love of natural form Kate decided to focus on physical, chemical and functional aspects of specific lichen species as the main theme to her work. From this she created a range of wearable brooches, The Lichenology Collection was launched at the Loughborough School of the Arts Postgraduate Degree Show in September 2014. Kate is now working towards her first solo exhibition to be held at The National Centre for Craft and Design in February 2015.
