Katie Almond

Katie Almond is an award winning designer maker specialising in ceramics working form her studio in Rutland. She produces hand-painted decorative porcelain jugs, cups, cake stands and brooches using a variety of slip casting and hand-building techniques. Each piece is essentially a canvas for decoration and collage as she combines drawings with found ephemera. Her inspirations come from a range of childhood memories with her gran, old paper ephemera, vintage textiles and a love of drawing. Traditional ceramic techniques are used in her work; slip casting, hand painting, and slab building. These are combined to create blank canvases for the application of colour and pattern, with under glazes being hand-painted onto the surface of each piece.

Her collections use elements from a different era alongside observations and drawings, text and collage. She focuses on pattern and detail using mixed media to collage and juxtapose the found and made. The pieces she creates are unique, one-offs that explore a variety of nostalgic themes that she is constantly adding to. Currently the themes are; the notions of afternoon tea, ‘Oh I do like to be beside the seaside’, gardening and flowers, and traditional blue and white pottery.

"So long, and thanks for all the fish"

After very many years of craft&design we've decided that we'd like to retire and so in 2 days we will close the craft&design website, including craft&design Online and the craft&design Selected Makers and Craft and Design Month websites. We've had a brilliant 35 years and would like to thank all our readers, advertisers, writers, contributors and website visitors for their support throughout that time. Our very best wishes to you all for the future - Angie and Paul.
