Equipping in World of Warcraft can be complicated, but Shadowlands has made strides to improve the layers of complication, so let's take a look at them.

First, all the information in this article is based on the start of Shadowlands season 1 (December 9), which means the Normal / Heroic Castle Nathria raid has opened and the Mythic + and Rated Arena seasons are in full swing.

With that in mind, let's take a look at some of the best ways to get gear in WoW: Shadowlands Season 1. We'll list each method in order of best item level.

WORLD QUESTS AND COVENANT CAMPAIGN SET

One of the earliest and easiest ways to get gear early in your equipping adventure is to do World Tasks and Vocations (the daily adventure you get sent on). You'll usually get about two or three world item quests per day, with another selection of world guide quests. These short, three to five minute quests can be found in the four main Shadowlands areas and can be completed solo or in a group.

As for the covenant campaign set, while the item level isn't that high, some of the early items are nice and you'll have the opportunity to upgrade them as you progress through the weekly campaign. For alts in particular, you'll be able to pick up this set much quicker due to the faster covenant leveling, so this will probably be a better option for alts.

CRAFTING AND PROFESSIONS

Crafting is a fantastic way to get up to a decent level of items before you reach level 60, looking to move around dungeons and raids. Crafted gear will take you to a high level of 155, with 161 available through Crafters Mark Rank 2. Gear can be made by tailors, blacksmiths and crafters, with jewelry and some weapons made by Inscription and Jewelcrafting.

As you level up crafting, you will also start coming across Legendary Crafting items (more on that later) that are worth your time and will give you a great item to sell. Crafting will never be your end goal, but by focusing on advancing your crafting as you level up, you can find a nice set of gear ready for you when you reach 60. If you do it right, you can even avoid most of the World Quest gear mentioned above.

DUNGEONS AND MYTHIC +

This is the only source of gear that you can farm all day long. With Normal and Heroic dungeons, you'll be able to get some decent starting loot. For those of you who are healers or tanks, you will also get almost instant queues, so prepping will be quick. The last dungeon level before Mythic + are the Mythic dungeons, often referred to simply as M0. These take place once a week, but offer a first look at some of the epic pieces of equipment in the game. These dungeons are also the best chance to get legendary items for creating legendary star equipment.

Mythic Plus (M +) are the final pillar of the Dungeon rotation. They are much more difficult than the Mythic versions, scaling higher with the key used. These dungeons are also time limited and require finding a group early and planning accordingly. Fortunately, with the loot level scaling and M+ replayability, you'll be able to spam them to your heart's content. Provided you can find the keys.

RAIDING

The final pillar of meshing through PVE comes from raiding. With loot scaling from LFR, Normal, Heroic and eventually Mythic. LFR is split into three wings and allows you to sign up to play with random players via the Raid Finder found in-game. While LFR offers the lowest level of items, it doesn't require a time commitment like raiding at higher levels.

For Normal and newer modes, you must enter with a group of friends. From 10 to 30 in normal and heroic. In Mythic, the hardest mode is locked to 20. For modes above LFR (especially at the beginning of the raid), you have to find a guild to do this content. However, the rewards are worth it. Mythic raids have the highest level in the game in terms of PVE content, so the challenges are definitely worth trying.
