  Selected Makers

Linda Connelly

For as long as I can remember, I have been fascinated by glass and jewellery. When my husband bought home an old enamelling kiln from a junk shop, I quickly became seduced by the compelling combination of colour and texture that can be achieved with enamels. Blending and shading different enamels to build up veils of colour in order to convey mood and feeling, never fails to provoke a feeling of excitement and anticipation, as no two pieces are ever completely identical.

Jewellery is a large part of my work. I often work directly on silver but sometimes I like to set enameled copper plaques in silver. Recently I have developed a range of silver jewellery inspired by fossils. I use sgraffito enamel on copper plaques and set these in silver with labradorites, moonstones and pebbles

I enjoy the challenge of constructing 3-D work using enamel on copper. Work so far include jewel like handbags incorporating glass beads and knitted wire and ‘Cakey Boxes’ which are enameled copper boxes with lift off lids and silver charms.

Clocks are a new direction for me. These are enamel on copper. Designs include the Brighton Pavilion,’ Angels’ and ‘Cakeys’.

Inspiration comes from the vibrant colours and spectacular architecture that I saw in India, and the natural world, particularly pebbles and fossils . I interpret these in a contemporary way with simple lines and shapes for the 21st century.

"So long, and thanks for all the fish"

After very many years of craft&design we've decided that we'd like to retire and so in 7 days we will close the craft&design website, including craft&design Online and the craft&design Selected Makers and Craft and Design Month websites. We've had a brilliant 35 years and would like to thank all our readers, advertisers, writers, contributors and website visitors for their support throughout that time. Our very best wishes to you all for the future - Angie and Paul.
