Selected Makers

Lorraine Ditchburn

Ribbed Bulb Vase by Lorraine Ditchburn

In craft or industrial design I believe that nature holds many of the answers.  As Leonardo da Vinci (1452 - 1519) once wrote, "In her (Nature's) inventions nothing is lacking and nothing is superfluous".  I try always to approach my work with this in mind.

I see my work as a reflection of myself - calm, modest and with an unassuming presence.  I design through making, observation and experimentation with materials and describe myself more as a creative maker than anything else.

My work is based on simple, organic forms combining their simplicity of shape with the fineness and purity of porcelain.  I draw my inspiration from many different sources and much of my work has been inspired by the intricately linen-wrapped mummies found in ancient Egyptian tombs.
