Seals - smoke fired ceramics by Mair Rossiter

Mair Rossiter Smoke Fired Ceramics
I live and work in Wales, drawing inspiration from the natural world around me and the things I have seen on wildlife holidays.

I specialise in various methods of smoke firing, some of which I have developed myself. I am drawn to the tactile quality of the smooth unglazed surface and by the long history and primitive traditions behind this method of firing.

Using porcelain and earthenware clays I create small sculptural items ranging from seals and other animals, dishes and bowls and more abstract pieces. The method of firing gives cohesion to this varied body of work.

Whilst the clay is still at the leather-hard stage I repeatedly burnish the surface with a pebble to achieve a polished finish. The first firing is to a low temperature so that the clay remains porous and can absorb smoke.  I then apply various masking materials so the absorption of smoke from an open fire creates the final surface pattern.

It is the contrast between this precise making process and the final, almost uncontrollable, stage of committing the cherished piece to the fire that continues to attract me.  It is the excitement of searching through the ashes to see if you have a masterpiece or a burnt offering!
