Marcella Di Mare

After 25 years as an advertising art director Marcella is now in the equally creative and rewarding world of the bookbinder. The step into bookbinding was a natural one for Marcella as there is a creative parallel between advertising art direction and bookbinding: how to convey an idea or story in an engaging and unique way.

She began her training in 2012 under two award-winning tutors: Mark Cockram at Studio 5 and Nicky Oliver at Black Fox Bindery. She still continues to take one-to-one tutorials and masterclasses from them.

Marcella started to make collages from various magazine clippings in 2004 when she grew frustrated by the lack of original and interesting stationery. As her collage collection grew it became obvious to use it for decorative papers in bookbinding.

Marcella creates distinctive journals, designed to be coveted. Truly individual, each piece is made by hand with high quality materials. Inspired by textures and colours, each journal is a unique expression of the joy of design, and love of craftsmanship using traditional binding structures. The collages are digitally printed for the outer boards. Hot foil tooling design varies; no two journals are the same. The structure is a disappearing Bradel binding, with hand folded white unlined Zerkall acid free paper with deckled edges. The corners on certain sections are not fully cut, making each page a pleasure to turn.

She is also a craft volunteer at www.bagbooks.org where she helps to make tactile story books for people with learning disabilities.

"So long, and thanks for all the fish"

After very many years of craft&design we've decided that we'd like to retire and so in 85 days we will close the craft&design website, including craft&design Online and the craft&design Selected Makers and Craft and Design Month websites. We've had a brilliant 35 years and would like to thank all our readers, advertisers, writers, contributors and website visitors for their support throughout that time. Our very best wishes to you all for the future - Angie and Paul.
