Martyn Pugh

Born in industrious Birmingham, Martyn cannot remember a time when he was not designing or making. His design process still draws on this early love for problem-solving, and his silverware combines a striking aesthetic with exceptional functionality. Martyn’s early studies led him to work with glass as well as metal. Although he went on to concentrate on silversmithing and jewellery, delicate glass forms feature in many of his signature pieces.

Simple lines, graceful curves and strong, confident forms comprise Martyn Pugh’s designs, and underpinning them are control, attention to detail and mastery over material. His inspiration is “rooted in the purity of natural form, in combination with the man-made geometry of engineering and architecture.” Whether jewellery or silversmithing, he makes to exacting standards and requirements.

Martyn also specialises in commissioned jewellery and silverware, and enjoys distilling his client’s ideas into precise hand-drawn sketches. His work can be found in amongst others, the Silver Trust at 10 Downing Street and the Goldsmiths’ Company collections and many other prestigious institutions.

Whilst working in Gold, Silver and Platinum, Diamonds Pearls and coloured stones, Martyn has recently pioneered the use of Palladium.  Whatever the project or material, Martyn’s experience, his skills at the bench and his innate inquisitiveness combine to produce dynamic and flamboyant designs.

Martyn established his Worcestershire workshop in 1976. He has won numerous awards and has exhibited widely.

"So long, and thanks for all the fish"

After very many years of craft&design we've decided that we'd like to retire and so in 37 days we will close the craft&design website, including craft&design Online and the craft&design Selected Makers and Craft and Design Month websites. We've had a brilliant 35 years and would like to thank all our readers, advertisers, writers, contributors and website visitors for their support throughout that time. Our very best wishes to you all for the future - Angie and Paul.
