  Selected Makers

Melissa Warren

I work with fine yarns, mainly viscose, wools and cottons, which are knitted in combinations on very basic domestic and industrial knitting machines, but rarely with pattern. Surface, texture, form and colour are enough. The dying of yarns and piece dying of knitting are key processes, as are hand manipulation, detail and finish in the making. Work crosses borders between accessory, jewellery and wearable art in some cases.

Contrasting surfaces of scarves are inspired by the surprises of nature, like the underside of a leaf, the inside and outside of a shell.  The resulting pieces, mainly accessories, are often two sided or reversible, with unusual colour combinations but with practicality and versatility too. Fine pleating, another key feature, using viscose and wool, is piece dyed with ombre shading.

As a full time maker, I allow my passion for exploration to push the boundaries of knit into fibre art work, for indoor and outdoor exhibitions, revising my ideas on colour to distil into self colour effects using the stretch of knitting to extremes.

I sell my accessories through 10 galleries in the UK, notably Craft in the Bay, home of The Makers Guild in Wales. I have travelled to Japan, USA and the continent to show and demonstrate work and locally run workshops and a Craft Club in my workshop/gallery, open for visitors on Thurs, Fri and Sats. I show work by other makers from Wales, mostly accessories and jewellery. I am a Crafts Council Selected member and Trustee of The Makers Guild in Wales.
