Memory Stather

Hand carved obsidian perfume bottle by Memory Stather

FGA. DGA. RBSA.
Designs from Memory
Memory set up her workshop in the Birmingham Jewellery Quarter in 1997 after many years of living abroad mainly in Africa and the Far East, where she taught Gemmology for a number of years. As a gemstone artist, her work combines many different, often rare and unusual gems.
Memory feels it is very important to create individual three-dimensional pieces that give pleasure. Her passion is carving, working to set free the shapes hidden in the stones and take advantage of their wonderful colours and natural beauty to emphasize her designs. Using these carved gems together with other stones and natural treasures such as shells, fossils and driftwood, she creates unique contemporary jewellery, setting the gems as gently as possible into precious metals, and combining the forms, colours and textures into a cohesive whole that is unique to each piece. In some instances she likes to let the gem material stand on its own as a pocket sculpture, perfume bottle or other small object, to be handled rather than worn.
Always fascinated by colour and play of light she also revels in the challenge of exploring plique-a-jour enamel, the most delicate and difficult of enameling techniques with its vibrant stained glass effect.
