Mia Sabel

After a successful career in theatre, print and online design, Mia Sabel trained to become a saddler. A Queen Elizabeth Scholarship Trust (QEST) award enabled her to expand on this training and augment her range of skills, products and services. So now in addition to her award-winning saddlery, Mia's work also includes leather restoration, upholstery, prototyping, product development, small batch production and bespoke leather design for horse, human and home. Mia is increasingly now offering her skills to other businesses.

Inspired by English saddlery techniques, materials and aesthetics, items are hand-cut from high grade hide and assembled using hand-waxed linen thread and a double-handed saddler's stitch for both strength and appearance. Exposed leather edges are sealed by hand - burnished using a cow bone and elbow grease. Mia can also wet-form and water harden leather.

Influenced by her previous experience, Mia also applies typographic treatments, hand-stamped into leather to create a surface texture that is both visual and tactile in appeal whilst allowing scope for customisation.

She has recently completed a commission to replicate William Morris' original satchel that will be produced in a limited edition, small production run.

Mia has also designed her own range of hand-made leather products that combine tradition, quality and usability. Her signature items include bags fabricated around recycled stirrup irons, a modular range of stationary detailed with vintage braces for closure, as well as her own iPhone case. Her work has recently been showcased by Fortnum & Mason and Holland & Holland.

"So long, and thanks for all the fish"

After very many years of craft&design we've decided that we'd like to retire and so in 7 days we will close the craft&design website, including craft&design Online and the craft&design Selected Makers and Craft and Design Month websites. We've had a brilliant 35 years and would like to thank all our readers, advertisers, writers, contributors and website visitors for their support throughout that time. Our very best wishes to you all for the future - Angie and Paul.
