Nick Roberson

Nick Roberson is a figurative stone carver and sculptor working in both public and private sectors.  In 2012 he became one of only a handful of stone carvers in the UK to be elected a member of the Master Carvers Association. For the past seven years he has run a stone carving business.

Nick has a long track record of historic building and sculptural restoration having trained with English Heritage as part of his apprenticeship.
As a young man I used to visit the home of the Sussex based sculptor and letter carver John Skelton when he opened his studio and garden to the public each year.  My grandfather was a sign writer and gilder and it is influences like these which helped to shape my interest in craft.

I completed my foundation studies in art and design at Eastbourne Art College where the influential artist John Meadows taught life drawing.  Having concentrated on sculpture I travelled to Sheffield Polytechnic to complete a Degree in Sculpture.

I studied architectural stonemasonry and carving, using traditional techniques, under master mason Roy Pepperell at Weymouth and Portland College.

For the first part of my apprenticeship I worked as an architectural stonemason and carver at Mather & Ellis stonemasons of Manchester.  For the second part I joined the heritage restoration company Treasure & Sons of Ludlow working closely with English Heritage on listed buildings and monuments including Compton Verney, Hill Court, Berrington Hall, Richards Castle Church and Hampton Court ( Herefordshire ).

After working as a freelance carver for 10 years I started my own company in 2006 specialising in figurative work. I am one of the only portrait artists working in stone in the UK today. I specialise in using indigenous British stone and Italian marble and but also work in bronze. I undertake new sculptural commissions as well as restoration projects.
In 2012 I was elected a member of The Master Carvers Association and am one of only eleven members specialising in stone.

"So long, and thanks for all the fish"

After very many years of craft&design we've decided that we'd like to retire and so in 150 days we will close the craft&design website, including craft&design Online and the craft&design Selected Makers and Craft and Design Month websites. We've had a brilliant 35 years and would like to thank all our readers, advertisers, writers, contributors and website visitors for their support throughout that time. Our very best wishes to you all for the future - Angie and Paul.
